USC: description of the SNAP system used for MUC-4

چکیده
The main goal of the SNAP project is to build a massively parallel computer capable of fast and accurat e natural language processing [3] . Under NSF funding, a parallel computer was built in the Parallel Knowledg e Processing Laboratory at USC and software was developed to operate the machine [2] . The approach i n designing SNAP was to find a knowledge representation and a reasoning paradigm useful for natural languag e processing which exibits massive parallelism . We have selected marker-passing on semantic networks as a way to represent and process linguistic knowledge . The work for MUC-4 started at the end of January 1992 . Prior to this we had implemented on SNAP a simple parsing system accompanied by a small knowledge base . When we started the MUC-4 effort we ha d only vague ideas how to implement large semantic network knowledge bases for linguistic processing . Thus for us MUC-4 was a major undertaking and soon we realized the difficulties and the time limitation . Faced with the MUG4 challenge, our group consisting of one faculty and five graduate students spent approximately 1450 hours to engineer a large system .

Portions of the American University in Cairo's MUC-7 system, MUC7-Plink, have participated in every Message Understanding Competition since MUC-4. The Plink parser was developed at the University of Michigan where it formed the core of the systems entered in MUC-4 [2] and MUC-5 [1]. Recently, the Plink parser was added to GATE [6] to facilitate interaction between language processing modules. M...

The GE-CMU team is developing the TIPSTER/SHOGUN system under the governmentsponsored TIPSTER program, which aims to advance coverage, accuracy, and portability in tex t interpretation . The system will soon be tested on Japanese and English news stories in tw o new domains . MUC-4 served as the first substantial test of the combined system. Because th e SHOGUN system takes advantage of most of...

BACKGROUND The PRC Adaptive Knowledge-based Text Understanding System (PAKTUS) has been unde r development as an Independent Research and Development project at PRC since 1984 . It includes a core English lexicon and grammar, a concept network, processes for applying these to lexical, syntactic, semantic, and discourse analysis, and tools that support the adaptation of the generi c core to new ...
متن کاملUSC: MUC-4 test results and analysis
During the final week of testing, our system was run on test sets TST3 and TST4 . Test set TST3 contains 100 articles from the same time period as the training corpus (DEV), and test sets TST1 and TST2 . The summary of score results for TST3 is shown in Table 1 . Test set TST4 contains 100 articles from a differen t time period then those of TST3. The summary of score results for TST4 is shown ...
